What is Podcasting?

Podcasting is internet radio, but more like the pioneering album FM stations that started in Honolulu in the 1960's than the Strictly Formatted corporate radio we suffer with today. Because the internet is not a broadcast medium like radio or television, there is no censorship. And because podcasting is very inexpensive to create and distribute, anyone can give it a try without paying for permits, building a transmitter or quitting their day jobs.

MauiCAST Podcast Network
Launched Thanksgiving Weekend

Over Thanksgiving weekend three Maui Internet pioneers; Keola Donaghy, David Fisher, and Scott Waters are launching the MauiCAST  Podcasting Network to develop and promote the use of podcasting on Maui as a new communication tool great for ?talking story ? and sharing the mana'o of the islands.

The first three MauiCAST shows are Keola Donaghy's NahenaheNet which covers the Hawai'i music scene, Scott Waters' MacHelp from Maui which shares numerous, laid-back tips for Apple Macintosh computer users and spotlights island musicians, and David Fisher's Cool Projects Maui featuring interviews with Maui innovators in both the public and private sector businesses. The goal of each podcaster is to deliver a 20-45 minute-long show approximately each week which can then be listened to over the Internet  These podcasts will also be available at www.mauicast.net along with information on other Hawaii podcasts and tips on producing and distributing your own podcast.

Listeners can easily download these radio-like programs and listen to them live or later playback at the listeners' convenience using an iPod or other portable "mp3" player. People with something to say can easily create their own programs and make them available to a world-wide audience. Listener feedback is encouraged through the individual website or web log of the "Podcaster".

Podcasts are an outgrowth and integration of blogging (web logging or journaling) and the wide acceptance and interest in portable audio programming created by the Apple iPod, other mp3 players, cell phones, and the ability to easily download a wide variety of content from the Internet through services such as iTunes.com where all the MauiCast.Net shows will also be available for free subscription.

This project represents a reunion of Donaghy, Waters and Fisher who first collaborated to develop one of the first free Maui computer bulletin board systems; MauiLink back in the early 90's before the introduction of the World-Wide Web.

  • Keola Donaghy began exploring the use of the World-Wide to promote Hawaiian music in the early 1990s, and launched Nahenahe.net in 1997. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, and remains active in the Hawai'i recording industry.

  • Scott Waters, a former Apple employee, has maintained a marketing and computer consulting practice on Maui since 1990 and worked as a visual artist, webmaster and designer. His wife and his Border Collie are both smarter than he is.

  • David Fisher teaches and counsels existing and start-up businesses as director of Maui's Small Business Development Center at the Maui Tech Park in Kihei and at Maui Community College where he launched the center in 1990.  He is a part-time musician and met his wife Jan Ryan when they were working at a college radio station.
